Fire Facilities training structures require regular inspection and basic maintenance to support dependable performance over time.
Every facility should have a routine inspection schedule based on its training frequency and the severity of its exercises. Consistent maintenance can help identify damaged components, reduce unnecessary wear and keep essential systems operating properly.
AFTER TRAINING
Remove debris. Check for visible damage.
A basic visual inspection of all WESTEMP® panels should be performed after each day of training. Any panel that has been punctured or cracked all the way through should be replaced before the next burn exercise.
Clean out ash, unburned fuel and leftover debris from the training structure, and watch for nails or screws that may have been left behind from burned pallets or other materials.
SAFETY EQUIPMENT
Inspect every ring. Replace worn components.
Inspect all rappelling rings to ensure they are tight and that the safety pin is in place. Check that all rings and mountings are in proper condition.
Replace any ring that shows signs of wear or damage, no matter how minor it may seem. Damaged or worn rings should be removed from service immediately.
EXHAUST FAN MAINTENANCE
Keep air moving. Protect every critical component.
01 — Inspect Fan Belts
Check belts periodically for wear and proper tension. When replacement is required, use the same belt type originally supplied with the unit. Multi-groove pulley systems should always use matched belts.
02 — Check Shaft Bearings
Shaft bearings may be relubricating or non-relubricating. Bearings on standard Model CWB fans are factory lubricated and generally require no additional lubrication under normal operating conditions.
03 — Tighten All Fasteners
Check all fasteners for tightness during each maintenance inspection and before restarting the unit.
04 — Clean Wheels and Housings
Inspect fan wheels and housings for oil, dust or other buildup that could create an imbalance. Before cleaning, make the unit nonfunctional by removing fuses, locking out the disconnect or following another approved lockout procedure.
05 — Maintain Fan Motors
Keep motor housings free of dust to support proper cooling. Motors with grease fittings should be maintained according to the manufacturer’s recommendations, while permanently lubricated motors should not receive additional grease.
ROUTINE INSPECTION AREAS
Key maintenance practices for safe, dependable performance.
01 — Visual Inspection
Inspect all WESTEMP® panels after each burn exercise to confirm they remain in good condition and have not been damaged.
02 — Temperature Monitoring
Check the temperature-monitoring system regularly to ensure it is working properly. Replace batteries as needed and confirm all thermocouples respond properly.
03 — Debris Removal
After each training day, clean out any debris, ash or unburned fuel that may have accumulated on floor decks and interior areas.
04 — Clean and Lubricate
Lubricate doors and shutter hinges on a regular basis to help ensure smooth operation.
05 — Rappelling Rings
Inspect all rappelling rings to verify they are tight, in good condition and equipped with all required safety hardware.
06 — Exterior Surfaces
Inspect exterior painted surfaces, primer-coated areas and structural steel for wear or scratches, and repaint where necessary.
